Lithographed certificate of the ‘Provincial College of Bristol & the Western District Rosicrucian Society of England’ (Bristol, 1871) 19” x 13.5” (engraved surface 15.5” x 10.5”) Horizontal fold across the centre. Printed in beige and black. The upper, symbolic section has cipher lettering, the text below, for individual details, is in English.
The design, and its ‘official’ interpretation are by Benjamin Cox, although Capt. F.G. Irwin – who had the certificate lithographed in Bristol by a printer who has not been identified – usually took the credit for its creation. The Bristol College of the SRIA had a short active life, 1869 to 1878, and few members, but the certificate was utilised and a very small number, variously inscribed or blank, as in this example, have survived.
