He was assistant professor of Greek and examiner in classics at Aberdeen University from 1861 until 1867. In 1876 he became professor of systematic theology and exegesis of the Epistles in the Free Church College, Aberdeen, and he was made principal of the College in 1898.

These lectures were delivered by Salmond in Edinburgh as part of the Cunningham Lectures series. He states in the introduction, “The present inquiry limits itself to the question, what is the witness of Scripture on the subject? The words of Christ are to me the highest authority, beyond which I seek no other.” Salmond’s essays cover the apostolic doctrine, the Pauline doctrine, Christ’s teaching, the Old Testament, and more.
