Apollonius of Tyana, a Greek Neo-Pythagorean philosopher from the province of Cappadocia in Anatolia. Apollonius was born into a respected and wealthy Greek family. His primary biographer, Philostratus the Elder (circa 170 – c. 247), places him circa 3 BC – c. 97 AD,  Apollonius was a teacher of asceticism, whose personal knowledge featured not only an understanding of mathematics and philosophy but also direct revelations from the gods.
