The Zohar first made its appearance in Provence in the latter half of the 12th century. Composed, it is believed, by Moses de Leon between 1280 and 1286, it is a mystical commentary on the Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible. It is still of immense and central interest to any who would seek to understand Kabbalah, and forms one of the central pillars of study to much of modern kabbalah.
